Why fatty liver matters
Excess fat can accumulate in the liver without causing obvious symptoms. In some people it remains mild, while in others inflammation and scarring may develop over time.
Who is at higher risk
Risk is higher with excess body weight, diabetes, high triglycerides, metabolic syndrome and some medicines. Alcohol intake also needs to be discussed honestly because it changes evaluation and management.
What evaluation may include
A clinician may use liver enzymes, metabolic blood tests and imaging, and may estimate the risk of liver fibrosis. A normal liver enzyme result does not always exclude fatty liver.
What helps most
Sustainable weight reduction when needed, regular physical activity, diabetes and lipid control, avoidance of unnecessary supplements, and limiting or avoiding alcohol are central. Treatment is individualized according to overall metabolic and liver risk.
